Bodegas Abeica
The fourth generation of the family to look after this land - in the shadow of the Sonsierra mountain range which gives it a very favourable microclimate - is currently in charge. Always a successful estate, in the 1990s it was buying in grapes and was very successful at home and abroad. However, the four siblings, Isabel, Ricardo, Pachi and Raul decided to change direction and concentrate on the family’s own vineyards, with some vines as much as 90 years old, and now the production comes solely from their own grapes. They have vineyards in excellent sites, with day/night temperature variation as much as 15 degrees which provides ideal conditions for grape ripening and complexity in the finished wines. Fermentations are generally whole bunch under carbonic maceration and the whole approach is hands-off, allowing the grapes to speak and reflect the different vineyards of the property. Farming is organic, although not certified.
The wines have in common a freshness which we like to see in Rioja – these are not over-oaked old school wines and the estate is at the forefront of the movement away from overly oaky expressions of Rioja to a lighter, more terroir-focused style.
